"You are the salt of the earth...You are the light of the world..."
–Matthew 5:13-16
Jesus was speaking to a crowd that, by most religious standards, didn't have much going for them. These weren't the polished Pharisees or the high-powered rulers. Many were fishermen, farmers, women, the poor, the overlooked. And right there on the side of a mountain, Jesus looked at them–not the religious elite–and told them they were salt and light.
It wasn't just a nice metaphor. Salt, in those days, wasn't just for flavor–it was essential. It preserved food when there was no refrigeration. It kept things from decaying. And light? Light brought visibility, warmth, and guidance. It changed everything about a space.
Jesus was saying that your life has impact. Don't downplay it. The world needs what's inside of you.
Let's be honest–it's easy to feel invisible these days. You post something encouraging, and it gets two likes. You raise your kids with patience, but no one claps for you. You try to live with integrity, but you feel like no one notices. Or maybe you mess up–big–and wonder if God still wants to use you at all.

But salt doesn't shout to be noticed. And light doesn't fight for attention–it just is. And when it's there, it changes things. Quietly. Powerfully.
Jesus doens't ask us to be flashy, perfect, or impressive. He asks us to be faithful. He asks us not to hide the light He's placed in us under fear, shame, or insecurity. He says, "Let it shine. Not for your glory, but so others will see Me through you."
You don't have to do something huge to make an eternal difference. Every kind word, every act of courage, every moment you chose faith over fear–it all lights up the dark.
So keep showing up. Keep being salt. Keep shining your light. Even when it's hard. Even when no one claps. Because your obedience might be the very thing that leads someone else to hope.
Prayer
Lord, help me to live boldly but humbly, to be salt when things are flavorless and light when things feel dark. Remind me that You can use even the smallest spark to ignite great change. In Jesus' name, Amen.
