Giving Thanks Even When Things Don’t Go As Planned

Vacation wasn’t supposed to look like this.

For months, our family looked forward to this trip. My youngest counted down the days. The kids were excited. We haven’t had a family vacation in quite some time, and this was something we all desperately needed.

The night we traveled to Destin, my son’s friend—who came along with us—started feeling sick. We were concerned but hoped it was just something minor.

By God’s grace, yesterday was everything we had hoped for. We spent the day at the beach, soaking up the sun, enjoying the water, and making memories together. That evening, we went to a restaurant where guests sign dollar bills and leave them hanging on the walls. As I watched my 16-year-old son add his bill, I had one of those proud mom moments. Instead of just signing his name, he included a Bible verse. It was such a simple thing, but it reminded me that God’s Word is taking root in his heart.

This morning his friend is feeling much better, but my son woke up sick. My husband isn’t feeling great either. Instead of spending today on a boat in the beautiful waters of Destin, we’re resting in our room and taking things one hour at a time. We’ve rescheduled our boat day for tomorrow and are praying everyone feels well enough to enjoy it.

I’ll admit, moments like this make me wonder why things happen the way they do. Why now? Why on a trip we’ve anticipated for so long?

But even in the disappointment, I’m reminded that gratitude isn’t dependent on circumstances.

Things didn’t go according to our plans today, but God is still good.

We’re together. We’re safe. We’ve already shared special moments and made memories that no sickness can take away. Even in the middle of unexpected disappointment, I can still see God’s blessings all around me.

Sometimes faith isn’t praising God because everything is going right. Sometimes faith is thanking Him when things aren’t going as planned and trusting Him anyway.

So today, I’m praying for quick healing, protection for the rest of the family, and a chance to enjoy tomorrow together. But regardless of what happens, I’m thankful for this opportunity, this time with my family, and the reminder that God’s goodness isn’t measured by how perfectly our plans unfold.

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” — 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Maybe the lesson for me on this trip is that vacations don’t always go according to plan, but God’s faithfulness never changes.
